Chapter 6. The Bay of Biscay Opening in the Frame of the Iberian-European Plate Boundary Formation
Résumé
This chapter reviews the present-day structure of the Bay of Biscay oceanic basin and its continental margins, as well as the geodynamic framework of its opening. The southern border of the Bay of Biscay was initially interpreted as a former self-sustained subduction zone based on the recognition of morphological similarities with active subduction trenches. The V-shape of the Bay of Biscay terminates to the east in the Aquitaine margin. The Bay of Biscay oceanic domain and its continental margins are part of a wider rift system that formed at the plate transition between Iberia and Europe in the latest Jurassic to Early Cretaceous time. At the scale of the Iberian-European plate boundary, a major change in the subsidence and deformation histories of the different sub-basins of the rift system is recorded in Aptian-Albian time
