Assessing the performance of concepts hybridizing geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage

This paper presents a method created for assessing the performance of concepts hybridizing geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage. The performance of a system can be represented by a set of key performance indicators. Those need to cover at least the quantity of energy produced, the amount of carbon stored, the environemental risk and impacts, the economics, and the uncertainties and challenges associated. The paper details the set of 17 indicators proposed for this study.
We assessed these indicators for each of the 15 hybrid concepts that were found in the literature, through about 150 relevant papers.
This shows that the concept that have a higher score in term of climate change mitigation potential have also a higher technical complexity. On the other hand, lower capacity concepts rely on more mature technology. This means they can scale faster and thus make a more substantial contribution.
