Denise Pumain, a renowned French geographer, is a specialist in cities and urban systems of the world.

As a researcher at Géographie-cités of which she is also the co-founder, she produced innovative works on urban dynamics. Professor at the Paris 1 University, she has transmitted her knowledge and know-how in spatial analysis and urban geography to several generations of students.

While developing an original scientific path, which has led to the development of an evolutive theory on cities, she opened up to other disciplinary fields and contributed to the construction of complexity sciences.

As a founder of the Cybergeo: European journal of geography, which is in open access, the diffusion of scientific production is close to her heart.

This collection of open archives brings together all of her scientific production to date and is constantly being updated, with the ambition to give free access to a maximum of original texts.

For an online journal, adaptation and renewal are constant qualities, most often accompanied by small incremental improvements, and sometimes by sudden changes of trajectory. This second modality of changes observed in complex systems was readily qualified as a bifurcation in the literature on self-organization processes, and is now more wisely called a "transition" if we wish to bring about a calmer participation to the adaptations that create novelty.

Cybergeo has experienced more than one transition, in total autonomy during its first ten years, first at the initiative of its creator Ky Nguyen, then under the impulse of Christine Kosmopoulos, who pushed us to join OpenEdition, then Freemium, and to maintain the platform negotiated with PKP, while Arnaud Banos then Clémentine Cottineau led us towards the publication of Model Papers and Data Papers. The journal owes it to its readers and authors to guarantee the sustainability of the work entrusted to it, through its ethics of quali...

This year, geographers from all over the world are coming to Paris to celebrate the centenary of the IGU, their largest international organization. Books published in French have already told the story of the international congresses of geography, which began in 1871, well before the creation of this institution (Pinchemel, 1972; Robic et al. 1996). The meeting of geographers is being held for the fifth time in Paris in July 2022. The work that was published on the occasion of the centennial (Kolosov et al., 2022) focuses in most of its chapters on issues related to internationalization.

Centenarians lend themselves to taking stock. Most are quite optimistic about the resilience of a discipline that has weathered many conflicts and challenges to its conceptual and methodological foundations. By ensuring the sharing of knowledge and by militating for an education open to the world, geography can boast of having helped the advancement of conceptions more favorable to the peace of soci...

Geographers and social scientists in general are familiar with the processes that create the world order and the representation we have of it. The long history of the world could be read as an endless quest for domination, by groups using weapons, ideologies and beliefs, technologies, systems of government, an incredible diversity of forms of pressure on people's lives. Little by little, moral reflection, politics, law, and sometimes science, have helped to build rules for better living together, at all scales in the world.

Geographers analyze this negotiated fabric of multiple networks, international legislations, or laboriously elaborated regional agreements, which accompany the progress of life expectancies, of the level of education and the retraction of extreme poverty measured by the human development indexes, as well as the transformations of habits towards more respect for nature and others. These representations of the evolving world order were able to cope with the oblivion...

Project background: Cybergeo and translation

When Cybergeo, the European Journal of Geography, was created in 1996, it immediately adopted a multilingual interface and has since published in several European languages. Indeed, the journal's ambition is to have a strong international visibility, its creation wished for by the informal network that has been holding European colloquia on Theoretical and Quantitative Geography every two years since 1978 (150 to 200 participating academics). Today, the journal receives proposals for articles from all over the world and publishes about fifty articles per year (of which about a third are by foreign authors).

Specialized in geography, Cybergeo covers all the branches of this discipline whose lexical field is quite specific among the human and social sciences: in addition to concepts developed by the social sciences, it includes vocabularies of physical geography, environment and planning, specific statistical methods (auto-correlation, fracta...

Cybergeo published its thousandth article on December 10th 2021. Christine Kosmopoulos has counted the number of views recorded for each of these articles by OpenEdition's statistics, for the first ten months of the year 2021. It is not a question here of drawing up a list of the most consulted articles. We know that these numbers fluctuate a lot from one year to another and we will not risk producing a random ranking. We have too often deplored the excesses of quantitative bibliometrics to indulge in this vain exercise that fascinates certain so-called "scientific" social networks! However, a quick exploration of this table brings some interesting elements to qualify our editorial policy and measure some aspects of its reception by our readers.

A first observation is the extreme diversity of subjects and issues that appear among the most read articles, be it the 10 articles that have been consulted more than 5000 times, or the 100 articles that have received more than 2000 views. Fo...
